The Lab
The overarching goal of our lab is to understand how the cell cortex is regulated during various physiological processes to bring about appropriate shape alterations. To address this fascinating problem using multiple approaches, we welcome individuals from diverse academic backgrounds (biologists, physicists, engineers & programmers as well! ) with a keen analytical sense and passion towards science to join us. Our experimental approaches include C. elegans genetics & molecular biology, live confocal imaging & image analysis and developing predictive models for experimental testing.
Positions
We have multiple positions open that could help you achieve your career goals.
1. Research Technician / Project Assistant/ JRF - (All positions are currently filled)
With a life sciences background, you will have an in-depth knowledge and expertise in molecular biology & cloning and/or microbiology. Prior experience in C. elegans is an advantage, but not mandatory.
Please email Anup with
2. Ph.D. students - (1 position)
There is 1 vacancy in the lab for a student who has a CSIR-NET, INSPIRE or DBT fellowship to work on cell shape and morphogenesis regulation during organism development. You will be selected through the Ashoka University Ph.D. program in biology . Please email Anup for more details.
3. Post-Doctoral Researcher (Open call)
If you are in the final year of your Ph.D. or 0-5 years after your Ph.D. viva and you feel that your research interests fall within the broad aims of the lab, please contact Anup to begin discussing your ideas. Post-doctoral scientists are encouraged to propose and pilot their projects with active input from the Anup and research community @Ashoka. The lab will fully support you in your application to obtain external funding to drive your research. Various funding options available to you include (but not limited to), SERB N-PDF, Wellcome-DBT Early Career Fellowship, DBT-Research Associateship, DST-Women Scientists Scheme, UGC-Post Doctoral Fellowship for Women. NCBS has collated a very useful resource here.
If you are interested in applying to any of these fellowship schemes, please contact Anup 6-9 months before the intended start date. This will allow us to deliberate on possible projects with fellowship deadlines in sight.
4. Ashoka Scholars Programme (ASP)
If you are considering to apply for the ASP...great ! It will be fun & rewarding, but also hard. The lab will always have space for 1-2 Ashoka Students who wish to carry out their thesis. Undergraduate students attached to the lab will be trained towards working independently. This means you will have to devote time and energy in your research project. Mid-way through the ASP, you might have to think and begin planning about your next step after your graduate. For these reasons and for you to get the most out of ASP, it is better if you can start in the lab in the 2nd year. This will also help you decide if you would like to continue in our lab for your ASP project/s. Thus, preference is given to an applicant who has previously interned in the lab.
Email Anup to inquire about all the exciting projects and possibilities.
5. Internships / Dissertation Projects- (None at this moment...we are super saturated! )
A good opportunity to check if you want to consider APLab for your long term project. The lab is committed to training short-term (8/16/ 24 weeks) visitors. We will have space for 1 or 2 enthusiastic interns, space permitting . If interested, please write to Anup 2-3 months before your intended start date. When writing to Anup you need to mention your start date and the duration of your training.
